Diagnosis: Subdermal Hematoma

Age at Diagnosis: 8 weeks old

Current Age: 16 years old

Michael's story, as told by his mother, Sarah:

When Michael was eight weeks old he suffered a severe seizure that stopped his heart and breathing. Michael was given CPR until the paramedics arrived and rushed him to CHKD. CHKD acted quickly to stabilize Michael through life support. They provided the testing and diagnosis to confirm that he had a subdermal hematoma or hemorrhaging around his brain.

CHKD temporarily released the pressure around Michael's brain, but the outlook was not good. Due to the seizure and loss of oxygen, it was believed that Michael would have many developmental disabilities and possibly some paralysis.

Michael was transferred from CHKD once he was stable enough for the ride to Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He remained in the hospital for two more months and had two surgeries to remove the built-up fluid.

Throughout the time spent at CHKD, the staff provided as much comfort and concern to a very worried mother as they could. I couldn't be more grateful for their care.

Michael is now a healthy, happy 16-year-old Junior in high school. He has played baseball, ice hockey, football, kickboxing, and soccer. He currently plays soccer at Salem High School. Other than being slightly behind in reading, he has had no issues with his learning development. I believe this is due largely in part to CHKD'S quick response, diagnosis, and treatment. Their immediate actions and knowledge were instrumental in his successful recovery.
