Diagnosis: Pediatric Cancer/ Wilm's Tumor

Age at Diagnosis: 7 years old

Current Age: 11 years old

Sammy's story:

Sammy was believed to have a lacerated kidney in July of 2014. Unsettled by the diagnosis not being in keeping with Sammy's activity level, his parents dug a little deeper. With the help and prompting of St. Jude, and further testing, CHKD confirmed a Wilm's Tumor in Sammy's left kidney by September 2014. The tedious surgery was performed by the skilled Dr. Kelly at CHKD to remove Sammy's left kidney, adrenal gland, and cancerous tumor.

Sammy was diagnosed with Stage 3 Wilm's tumor with favorable histology and began treatment in September 2014. He underwent radiation and chemotherapy at CHKD and entered remission in March of 2015.

He is as active as ever and full of life. He currently plays travel baseball and is honing his skills as a switch hitter and switch pitcher! Sammy is a cancer survivor and sees life through the eyes of a child who gained valuable life perspective from a very young age. The skies the limit for Sammy!

His parents continue to share Sammy's (and his sister, Ellia's) story to help encourage and empower people to advocate for their loved ones and to trust your gut when things feel "off".
